A recent meeting between Chinese and Nepali authorities, held as recently as May, to discuss strengthening cooperation on monitoring natural hazards in the region underscores the urgent need for better cross-border information sharing. Experts argue that greater communication, information sharing, and collaborative analysis of transboundary risks are needed to mitigate mountain hazards.
The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) reports released in March 2026 highlighted accelerating glacier loss in the Hindu Kush Himalaya region, increasing the risks of cryosphere-related hazards. ICIMOD’s findings indicate that HKH glaciers lost around 12% of their total area and 9% of their estimated ice reserves between 1990 and 2020.
Glacier ice loss had doubled after 2000, with the smallest glaciers shrinking rapidly. Three-fourths of HKH glaciers fall into the vulnerable category of less than 0.5 square kilometers. These alarming findings have not prompted sufficient action from governments and international organizations.
