Israel Bombs Gaza, Casting Doubt on Trump Peace Plan

The weekend’s airstrikes on Gaza have exposed the disconnect between Israel’s actions and its commitments to peace. As President Donald Trump touted his 20-point plan as a “big step for the Middle East,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seemed to be playing a different tune – one of unrelenting aggression against Palestinian civilians.

Over 73,000 Palestinians have been killed since the October cease-fire, while five Israeli soldiers have lost their lives. The war that began after Hamas launched a terrorist attack on Israel has seen no letup in violence, with recent airstrikes killing at least 25 people, including four in Deir-al-Balah. Energy Minister Eli Cohen suggested that Israel would need to take full military control of Gaza if Hamas doesn’t disarm, raising questions about the true intentions behind Trump’s peace initiative. This stance undermines the entire framework for implementing the plan, which includes steps such as transferring civilian and security functions to a technocratic committee and deploying an International Stabilization Force.

However, with Israel expanding its control over nearly 70% of Gaza’s territory, it’s clear that these plans are being quietly shelved. Trump’s administration has consistently shown a willingness to overlook Israeli aggression in pursuit of a supposed “peace deal.” For Palestinians living under constant threat of bombardment and occupation, the issue isn’t about diplomatic posturing or political expediency – it’s about basic human rights and the right to live without fear.

As the international community watches with growing unease, it’s time to ask some hard questions: will Netanyahu ever be held accountable for his government’s actions? Will Trump’s plan remain nothing more than a hollow promise, sacrificed at the altar of Israel’s expansionist agenda? And what does this mean for the prospects of a genuine two-state solution in the Middle East?

For Palestinians and their supporters, there can be no business as usual – not with Netanyahu’s Likud party firmly in control and far-right voices growing louder. As the election season heats up in Israel, it’s imperative that international pressure on Netanyahu intensifies, forcing him to confront the consequences of his actions.
